Keith let me go over to his house today to play Champions on his computer. The game allows players to customize their superhero avatars down to the tiniest detail such as nose length, exotic costume accessories and every possible body type known to comic book tradition. The objective of the game is that of a superhero's work: you are sent around the world to protect humans from Qularr/alien invasion, Irradiates/nuclear mutants and other known forces of evil. My character is a cybernetic human with purple recticle eyes, telekinetic powers and a focus on the study of Mysticism. I named her INRI after Spider Jersusalem's (from Transmetropolitan) Jesus shoes he bought on a TV infomercial.

The one I wish I saw ...

I went with Peirong to see the Tauba Auerbach show at Deitch last week. Couldn't help but feel the artist needed a re-vamp/re-do/re-print of her book (why the cliche horrible typeface?!!!) and an injection of mystery to the work. Whoever 'They' are, they're doing it wrong. Plus she's hot, but why put her in a box with what's her name from Glass Candy? Watered down Pipilotti Rist prints in badly curated reflective plastic frames. The organ is impressive, buy why was it made of wood?

The LED Umbrella

The LED umbrella is inspired by the neon umbrellas of Blade Runner. They lighted the dark streets of dystopian Los Angeles in 2019 and now they can illuminate our world too, with the Rain-Glo LED umbrella now available online at ThinkGeek.com.

LED stands for 'light-emitting diode.' When electrons in the diode are brought from a state of high energy to a state of low energy, the energy difference is emitted in the form of light known as electroluminescence. LED technology has been around since the early 20th century, but did not go into commercial use until the 1960s due to high cost of production. The technology saw an advancement a decade later in the increased light-emitting power of the diode, and therefore affected the overall vision of the possiblites of LED lighting.

We now use LED technology for the most basic of applications, from indicator lights to large video screens and handheld devices. However, incorporating an LED light into an umbrella makes this ordinary object seem otherwordly.

THE REACTABLE

The Reactable is a collaborative electronic music instrument using a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface. Several performers can share control over the instrument simultaneously by moving and rotating colorful sound blocks around on a translucent, luminous round table surface. These sound blocks represent the components of a classic modular synthesizer: by moving and relating them you can adjust frequencies of sound waves, frequency, volume, and tempo. A camera situated beneath the table continually analyzes the surface activity, tracking the player's fingertips and the positions of the blocks that are distributed on its surface. Users can create complex and dynamic sonic topolgies with the Reactable's generators, filters and modulators in a graspable flow-controlled programming language. The Reactable is, according to its makers (however cryptic-looking with its Turtan symbols and wierd colors) meant to be an intuitive instrument, with zero-instructions, zero-manual, learnable and suitable for all.

The instrument was developed by a team of four digital inventors working at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcleona, Spain. Sergi Jorda, Martin Kaltenbrunner, Gunter Geiger and Marcos Alonso's main activities concentrate on the design of new musical interfaces using tangible music instruments and music applications for mobile devices.

OPTIMUS MAXIMUS

Russian design studio Art Lebedev's Optimus Maximus is a keyboard that features mini OLED screens as individual keys. The keyboard allows the user to customize each key with different functions. For example, your TAB key can now have a second command function, such as bringing up an email page or executing photoshop shortcuts.

There are eleven additional 'hot' keys included on the left of the keyboard which can display the color icons of your favorite programs. For those who want more keys or don't want to commit to a completely new keyboard, there is the Optimus AUX attachment that features 15 keys, or the three-button Optimus Mini 3. With the increased popularity of applications for cell phones, desktop and social networking sites, customizable technology is making life more efficient.

*OLED technology is an adaptation of LED that is composed of organic materials that emit softer light as opposed to the harsher point-light of LED. The organic compounds are laid in rows and work well in a flat screen format.

NEUROSKY

Telekinesis is no longer something exclusively possible for superhumans, mutants or Jedis. Neurosky is a company based in Silicon Valley, California now making it possible for those without midi-chlorian count in their veins to move objects with their mind. They have created a headset prototype that uses wearable sensor technology to detect our body's bio-signals (such as brainwaves, eye movements, and heart rate) and interpret them into a language a computer or toy can understand. So in order to wield Neurosky, a basic human emotion will now have to be trained as a command rather than an involuntary emotional response. These signals assign triggers to lift, push or pull programmed physical objects as well as to control metaphysical movement in simulated computer gameplay. The company is focusing mainly on applying this new technology to the gaming industry, achieving a higher level of virtual reality where buttons and controls are no longer in the way of a complete fantasy experience.

THE HUSSEIN CHALAYAN SHOW FROM FASHION AND BACK AT THE DESIGN MUSEUM IS A FANTASTIC OTHERWORLDLY DIMENSION OF HAUTE-TECH CELEBRATING THE DESIGNER’S 15 YEARS IN FASHION.

The exhibition is a comprehensive presentation of Hussein Chalayan’s work to date- from a buried slipdress from his 1993 Central Saint Martins graduate collection “The Tangent Flows” to his latest collection themed on speed, “Inertia”. The exhibition explores Chalayan’s experimental approach to fashion design by showcasing signature designs that introduce cutting-edge technology such as LED and laser lighting, projection and industrial machinery into clothing. The infamous fibreglass remote-controlled aeroplane dress from S/S 2007 will be tested this year for operational perfection. The body of work shown (he calls it “work-to-date” retrospective) also reflects his ongoing fascination with the themes of cultural identity, displacement, speed and genetics.

Chalayan’s short fashion films ‘Temporal Meditations’, ‘Absent Presence’ (starring Tilda Swinton) and ‘Anaesthetics’ will all be featured for the first time in the UK.

The show opens from the 22nd of January until May 17, 2009.

The premiere issue “Paradise Lesage” will consider two polar visions of the future: the dystopian society versus utopian. The issue draws its mood from Alain-Rene Lesage's La Tontine:

The Double Club

Fondazine Prada and German artist Carsten Höller have designed a new pop-up bar/restaurant/dance club in London called the Double Club. It is a Congo vs. Western themed project realized in Angel in an old Victorian warehouse that used to be a paintball venue.

Best features of the club are: a rotating dance floor, a brilliant Portuguese azulejos tiles garden showing the 1920s design of a Utopian flying city by Russian architect Georgi Krutikow, and a painting by Congolese painter Cheri Samba (shown above).

The restaurant will be open from 21 Nov 2008 for six months. The nightclub comes alive from 10PM. Richard Mortimer hosts Western DJs and live bands on Thursdays and Saturday nights.

Thierry Mugler for Secondlife

Today I took at trip out to Dr. Muglerstein's island in Secondlife with my brother's avatar, Dagny Serpente. We acquired some amazing Thierry Mugler accessories, including a talisman, sunbelts 1 and 2, and electric hair. It is an understatement to say Dagny was made over- she looks incredible now- and a true Muglerienne.

note: Dr. Muglerstein's Island was specifically created for Thierry Mugler by creative agency Balistikart. The island is scheduled to close on December 31st. For the moment it is open to all SL inhabitants to visit.
